Oftentimes, it can be difficult distinguishing hyperactivity in children and normal active behavior. Is the child who is darting around the house and never stopping a hyperactive child, or just a normal child?

To differentiate between the two, one must understand that it is the quality and quantity of the movements of the child that define what is hyperactivity in children and what is normal active behavior. When observing the child, are the movements of the child purposeful or random? Hyperactive children tend to be restless, fidget a great deal, run into things, over objects and/or people, and climb up anything they can. The hyperactive child just never seems to stop and appears they are moving strictly to move and let loose.

As a parent of a hyperactive child, this can be utterly exhausting! You’ll find you are chasing your child in order to save your home or to save your child from injury. As a parent, you want to help your hyperactive child direct their energy in constructive ways and at appropriate times. It certainly can be a challenge to parent hyperactive children but there are some methods that can help you and your child in the journey. Below are some tips that can help you as you work on disciplining your hyperactive child.

Hyperactivity in Children Tip #1: Teach Relaxation Techniques

While hyperactive children love to be active, it is healthy that they learn how to relax. Relaxation is good for both the mind and the body and can teach your child self-control. Work on sitting still with your child, teaching them to breathe deeply, close his or her eyes, and imagine a peaceful setting. It can sometimes help to massage their shoulders and hands in order to encourage relaxation, as well as play peaceful music.

Hyperactivity in Children Tip #2: Structure

Hyperactive children require structure in their environment. Make sure to stick to a schedule and provide boundaries for your child.

Hyperactivity in Children Tip #3: Throw out the phrase, “Time Out”

The concept is the same, but the name has changed. Use terms such as “quiet time” or “reflective time” that encourages stillness and thought.

Hyperactivity in Children Tip #4: Body Awareness

Teaching your child to be aware of their body and their space will help them to not impose on anothers space or person.

Hyperactivity in Children Tip #5: Listening

Hyperactivity in children can also show up verbally! If your child talks non-stop, teach them the importance of listening to other people and taking turns in the dialogue.

Hyperactivity in Children Tip #6: Supervision

Hyperactive children require a great deal of parental supervision and connectedness. A great deal of the day is spent redirecting your child’s behavior and telling them to “stop”. Make sure to block out some time each and every day where you and your child can spend some quality time together enjoying each others company. This is a great time to demonstrate stillness and model positive behavior while enjoying spending time together.

Do what you always tend to remain up with. Do you would like to occur to create use of a journal or a pocket e ebook at residence, that is normally one issue that is visiting be any personal. In case you choose on to aim to to a baby journal on-line, that is visiting be very public. Completely completely completely totally totally different pregnant ladies may notice you and commiserate with you, that will be sensible on days do you’ve got need to uncover yourself drained, sore, sick, and dealing to the lavatory every five minutes. Generally, misery terribly will love company.

However, the toddler diary could terribly rather be to your youngster to non-public once they are older. This might be one issue that you only offer them once they’re sixteen or whereas they are ready to journey away for school. Some youngsters might not need to possess such an component at these ages, nonetheless it is one issue they’ll admire in the end. At the identical time as quickly as they are doing not get them till you cross away.
Article by Marianne Wilson

Child discipline is one of the greatest challenges for parents. The encouraging thing to remember is that the ability to discipline children effectively can be learned, as for many parents it does not come naturally. This article focuses on a how to discipline children strategy that used consistently will make the task of disciplining of children much easier.

As a parent, an important strategy is to be proactive in preventing unacceptable child behaviour rather than being reactive and reacting to the behaviour after it has occurred. One way to do this is to communicate clear expectations as to what is acceptable behaviour before bad child behavior actually occurs. It is important to be clear in your own mind as to what is imperative to address to successfully teach your child what is right and wrong, so that you, yourself, are clear. If the boundaries are unclear, the child can get confused.

Make a time to sit down with your child well in advance and lay out the expectations and consequences of misbehaving or a misdeed. Make it clear that in no uncertain terms is there any room for negotiation at the time of the infraction, and that should such a behavior occur you intend to be firm in your discipline. Rules regarding your child’s safety, health or well-being should have no room for negotiation when being set or enforced. Other rules can be openly and honestly discussed with your child and an agreed upon action should be forged that both parents and child can accept. If necessary, make a contract between parent and child. Lay it all out in black and white, in language your child can clearly understand. For younger children, you might want to develop a good behavior chart within the contract, and for each week that goes by without any infractions being noted, a favorite or special activity might be earned. The connection between good deeds and special time with mom and/or dad might just be the understandable motivation that they need.

However it is important that all children need to understand that this method of child discipline is your way of teaching them what’s acceptable child behavior and what isn’t. It may seem as though children fight rules and regulations, but deep down they know that child discipline is intended for their well-being, health, and safety. Children’s discipline enables a child to grow into a mature person capable of making responsible decisions.

Discipline for the majority of the twentieth century was adult-centered and relied heavily on punishment as a way of keeping children on the right track. Discipline was based on the principle of severity and terms such as punishment, obedience and compliance were commonly used.

Often I hear parents say that they spank or yell at their kids. This is not because these parents do not care for their children but because they really don’t know any different. If you look at the world today, what do you see as socially more “acceptable”; yelling at a child doing something “bad”, or creating a “yes” environment for that same child? The first of course, it’s the way it’s “always” been done, right?

Second, is there anything else going on in your child’s life that might be causing stress or is there anything else going on in your life that might be causing stress to your child? Children are creatures of habit. While they enjoy the new they also crave routine.

If he still refuses to follow the instruction, the parent follows up by saying, “That’s two.” At this point it would probably be a good idea to once again repeat the previous directions. If the child stops the inappropriate behavior and follows the instruction, then the problem has been solved. If the child still refuses to follow instructions than the parents simply states “That’s three,” and follows with the consequence stated at the start of the counting.

Parents need to acknowledge and provide positive responses every time a child follows the rules by giving some form of encouragement or reward. Otherwise, the child should be informed of the consequences for breaking the established rules. Children learn from experience, and it is therefore necessary to let them experience the consequences rather than submerge them into punishment. Most parents confuse parenting discipline with punishment, but it should not be the case. Instead, mistakes can be a turned into a venue for learning.

Be careful when using threats. You tend to say things you do not mean when you get angry. Too many threats will effect your child behavior too. They will learn from you and use your words to threat other people thus leads to bad manner.

We need to obviate the reliance on this method quickly, especially as one sensible alternative exists. Some experts have suggested that natural consequences be applied to correct action. For example, if your child breaks your favorite dish, it is better that the child is punished by having to sacrifice his weekly allowance or do extra chores as a consequence.

This seems to be one of the most overlooked methods of discipline but yet the very word discipline means instruction or teaching and the most effective way to teach or instruct is to open dialogue between you and your child. Speak with them and decipher the reasons behind their behavior.

Parenting runs along two continuums: abusive and nurturing. One can equate higher incidence of nurturing with less incidence of abuse because the two behaviors are mutually exclusive. In nurturing single parent families, children receive support, have clear boundaries, and live under appropriate expectations. In abusive single parent families, too much may be expected from the children. Empathy for the children is lacking, physical punishment is prominent, and lack of awareness of the children’s developmental levels is evident.

It is clear, however, that many single parents who become involved in the child welfare system did not intentionally harm their children; rather their lack of knowledge, skills, or resources led them to harm their children.

The best way to then to prevent child abuse is to help single parents, through effective parent training, to develop their skills and identify resources they need to understand and meet their children’s needs and protect them from harm.

Moreover, research has shown that increasing positive parent interactions and emotional communications; and, requiring parents to practice new skills during and away from the training provides for the intended outcome of improving parenting skills and decreasing the children’s externalizing behaviors. Furthermore, the long range consequence of child abuse is that children who experience such maltreatment are at greater risk for adverse health effects and risky health behaviors when they reach adulthood.

Some worthwhile goals for an effective parent training program then should include: helping parents to learn ways to discipline their children other than by yelling and hitting, such as redirection (trying to shift a child’s attention from something dangerous, such as jumping off a chair to something harmless, such as doing a puzzle.); helping parents learn to teach their children how to control their anger as well as to manage their own angry feelings and stress; helping parents to learn stages of child development and to acquire realistic expectations; making available to parents in-home one on one parent coaching and support groups, and finally, helping parents to learn job hunting and life management strategies. In addition, the program should have a problem-solving focus, provide for active participation, involve the whole family, and target individually identified needs.

Several different types of parent training exist, such as models designed for parents who just want additional information to be sure they are doing the best job they can, and models that address specific needs, such as families experiencing child behavior problems or families in which child maltreatment is a concern. The program described above emphasizes the latter.

If your child has been newly diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or if your child has been taking prescription drugs and they don’t seem to work well, then make sure to read this article. In it, you will learn a natural way to overcome the symptoms without putting your child’s health or development at risk.

There are many ways to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Although the treatment that you are most familiar with is probably prescription drugs, there are some things that you need to know before giving your child prescription medicine. First, drugs do not cure ADHD; instead they suppress the symptoms. If your child stops taking the medicine, then the symptoms will return.

Second, prescription drugs have side effects. Some people are more sensitive to these side effects than others. Although the side effects depend on the type of drug your child is taking, they can range from things like sleeplessness to loss of appetite to more serious issues like psychosis and even heart issues. While loss of sleep and appetite seem relatively tame when compared to the more serious issues, understand that in order for a child to develop properly, he must get proper sleep and nutrition. Despite all this, some kids do well on prescription medicines.

Due to the side effects and unknown long term risks of giving kids with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder prescription medicine, many parents are turning to natural remedies. These remedies can be very effective when given daily in a formulation that is specifically formulated to treat ADHD.

Look for all-natural, plant-based ingredients such as Tuberculinum, Arsen Iod, Verta Alb and Hyocyamus. These ingredients have been clinically proven to reduce outbursts, agitation, hyperactivity, impulsivity and tantrums, while increasing concentration and the ability to stay on task. These remedies work by providing the brain with the nutrients it needs to overcome the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder without side effects, drug interactions or any other complications.

No matter which treatment method you follow, a healthy diet will enhance your efforts. Avoid sugary, caffeinated sodas which can worsen hyperactivity and agitation. Also, try to wean your child off processed foods that contain dyes and preservatives that adversely affect the brain. Instead feed your child a diet that is primarily made up of fresh vegetables and fruit in season, lean protein, nuts, legumes and whole grains. Not only will this type of diet create even blood sugar levels, it will also give your child the nutrients to help heal the brain.

In addition to a daily natural remedy and good food, make sure your child gets daily exercise. This can include anything from walking the dog around the block to a bike ride to organized sports. Exercise is important not only because it will tire your child out and reduce hyperactivity but also because it releases feel-good endorphins that rejuvenate the body and brain.

Although this is a simple program for treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, it works. Start with a good quality natural remedy, wean your child off processed foods, replace with healthy, natural foods and add regular exercise. Before you know it, you will notice a shift in mood and behavior that will serve your child at home and in school. Get started today.

Genesis II for Families is able to provide assessment of parenting competence as well as quality of the relationship between parent and child. The objective of parenting assessment is to make timely as well as appropriate recommendations concerning the permanency of child and family preservation. To evaluate parenting, Genesis II for Families makes use of many different information sources.

The different information sources used include family of origin interview, family of creation interview, parent-child observation sessions, if appropriate, interview of the child, standardized parenting vignettes, assessment checklists and inventories as well as other collateral information.

Factors Contributing to Current Parenting Practices

The parenting assessment tools help in understanding factors that contribute to current parenting practices, beliefs as well as skills. It includes parental empathy towards the child as well as child behavior perceptions and expectations of the child. Normally, this form of parental assessment can be finished in three to four sessions with each session being of one and a half hours duration. The assessment is performed by master level professionals who have clinical experience in working with troubled families.

There are other parenting assessments such as the St. Luke’s Parenting Assessment and Skills Development Service that believe that children have the right to long term well-being, and children will be unable to develop successfully unless they are given adequate standard of care. Parents always wish the best for their children and strive to give them appropriate care; however, there are also parents in need of assistance, which if not provided, will lead to unsafe behaviors that will require Child Protection involvement.

In any case, parental assessment is all about gathering information from many different sources concerning the needs of the children, the ability of parents to meet such needs, and the skills as well as strengths of the parent. Such information is subjected to analysis in order to present recommendations based on the best interests of the child.

The need for parenting assessment arises out of therapists or lawyers needing to understand the manner in which someone approaches parenting and also helps takes stock of the strengths and weaknesses of such person(s). There are many instances where problems relating to a parent’s behavior or problems between child and parent need to be addressed so that a decision on behalf of the child can be taken. Parenting assessment is of help to lawyers, Children’s Aid Societies as well as community agencies in deciding what is best for both child and parent. All information gathered will then be submitted to the courts or lawyers or other concerned persons in the form of a written report.

Symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder

Lots of controversy surrounds ADD and ADHD in children. Strong and differing opinions exist on how schools and doctors should handle ADD and ADHD. A little known fact is that several adults also struggle with these disorders.

Symptoms of ADD and ADHD (Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) fall into three classes:.

* Problems with attention. ADD/ADHD sufferers have more trouble paying attention than others.* Hyperactivity. People with ADD/ADHD struggle with sitting still.* Impulsiveness. ADD/ADHD sufferers cannot control impulses to speak or move.

A diagnosis of ADD/ADHD does not require symptoms in all 3 categories. All 3 types of symptoms could be present, or the ADD/ADHD person may have only one kind of symptom.

ADD/ADHD is characterised by the following symptoms:

* Fidgeting and jumping out of one’s chair. * Being impatient.* Unable to follow instructions.* Interrupting a question to answer.* Tendency to speak too much and interrupt.* Does not listen.* Trouble finishing tasks. * Frequently forgetful.* Loses track of things.

Getting to a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD will take time. Diagnosis can take a while whether or not it is a kid or an adult having symptoms. Doctors use four separate criteria to diagnose ADD/ADHD. Four criteria that has to be present are:.

* Symptoms must have started before age seven.* Symptoms must be evident in a minimum of 2 separate settings, for example home, work, or school.* Symptoms must prevent normal functioning in these situations.* Symptoms are not an effect of any different illness or condition.

Self-diagnosis of ADD/ADHD is not recommended. People coping with ADD/ADHD should see a physician or mental health professional to rule out other causes.

ADD/ADHD often is wrongly diagnosed when the real problem is situational or behavioral. ADD/ADHD medications can not help behavioral or situational problems.

Behavioral methods are the best treatment for behavioral problems. Situational causes are common when adults and kids show ADD-like symptoms. A boring class or a bad employment situation can cause ADD-like symptoms. Jumping to an ADD/ADHD diagnosis too soon can cause unnecessary medication and ineffective treatment.

ADD/ADHD might well have a physical cause. Depressive disorders and anxiety disorders do typically overlap with ADD/ADHD. Accurate diagnosis is the key to effective treatment Effective treatment of underlying depression and anxiety must go hand in hand with ADD/ADHD treatment if both are present.

Anxiety and depression can not be effectively treated unless any ADD/ADHD is treated too. Sustainable recovery is more likely when all conditions are diagnosed and treated at once.
