Ignore the Unimportant

To keep you in a commanding and controlling position always ignore the unimportant points. Don’t get irritated with minor things. It is not only important for you but for your child as well. Instead of shouting or yelling at them it is better to keep quite or just in a routine way try to make them realize that the act of theirs is not a trait of good child. Make Good Behaviors Pay off

Behaviors modification is a gradual process and there are few things that are required to modify the behavior in a positive way. As the law of behavior modification states that, a behavior which is rewarded, will be repeated and by ignoring the undesired behavior, it will go away.

Encouragement and Rewards

Rewards and encouragement are two great tools to boost the good behavior of the child. Rewards can be soft, hard, and cumulative or even in the form of privileges tokens. Soft rewards contain praise, parental pride and enthusiasm. Hard rewards are based on money, time, food etc and cumulative rewards contain stars points and tokens. But the most powerful reward is your own gestures, i.e. verbal through voice, eyes, and interest.

Democracy without Debate

This is another important point. Each age group of children requires different type of instructions. Argument is not possibly the problem with young children but the children over ten years of age have some say in their responsibilities and duties. Children less than five years old can simply told what to do; children from five to eight year olds need some sort of explanation. Parents should be required not to indulge themselves in any sort of argument because you cannot win over these mini lawyers. Make your point clear and say no arguments.

Stay Calm

It is important for you as parent to stay calm in your dealing with children. Never get irritated at any time, keep your nerves cool. Remember, your harsh or strict behavior can sometimes raise the intensity of unimportant behavior of the children.

Why Are My Children Misbehaving?

Many parents ask the question: Why are my children misbehaving? It may be that your children are misbehaving in public or when you are with company, OR it may simply be that they are being unruly when at home. Under any of these circumstances the primary reason for a child’s misbehaviour is their need for attention. In-fact the most common reason children misbehave is simply because they have unmet needs of some form. Children feel the need to belong.

Their misbehaviour may be an attempt to gain membership or to discern if they will still be accepted. Thus it is important to show your children that you still love them and that they are still part of the family even if they misbehave.

Children misbehave when they lack confidence or feel inadequate.

Children may misbehave when they are afraid to try new things (e.g. food) or fear failure at a new task. When this is the situation you must help children to understand that everyone makes mistakes, even adults.

Children misbehave when they feel unwell.

Daily exercise, a healthy diet, fresh air and 8-12 hours of sleep are essential for children. Without these essentials they may be hard to get along with. The majority of discipline problems occur around 8 a.m., noon, 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. when children are either hungry or tired. However, be careful not to punish your children when they are physically sick!

Children misbehave when they are upset.

Small changes in a child’s daily routine can upset them. This can include anything from a change in daylight saving hours, changing season or a new schedule. More major changes can cause upset as well, such as moving house or a divorce. The new situation is unfamiliar to the child and they need reassurance and guidance.

Children misbehave when they are discouraged.

Adults can be too quick to tell a child when they are doing something wrong and too slow or completely forget to praise them when they are doing right. Children who feel they are bad have the tendency to act so and may hurt others in the process. Children who feel stupid will not perform as well as they can in school. Children need praise and approval when they do something good, even for small things such as saying “thank you”. This will help prevent misbehaviour to gain attention from parents.

Raising kids nowadays is very difficult. One effective parenting skill that you need is being consistent. Why do you need to be consistent? Kids, when they try to learn something try to see patterns. Patterns help them remember things. If you are consistent with your rules, they will remember what you want them to learn. If you change your rules every so often they will get confused. They wouldn’t know when they are doing the right thing and when they are not. Being consistent does not only mean being consistent with your rules but also being consistent with how you implement your rules. Your manner of imposing rules and giving rewards or punishments should also be constant so as not to confuse them.

Another skill that you need is keeping your words. If you say something, you have to mean it and you have to do it. If you say you will cut down their internet time if they get low grades, you have to really cut down their internet time. If you don’t, they will not believe you the next time you say it to them. In other words, this means they will not follow you. They will say it is okay not to follow because they can get away with it anyway. If you want to keep your word, make sure everything that you will utter is something that you can really do and you are willing to do. If you say that you will keep them out of the house if they disobey you but at the back of your mind you do not want to keep them out then don’t say it otherwise you will eat your words should they disobey you.

Another parenting skill that you must have is to try to be a friend to them. This means that you should let them feel that they can approach you anytime they would need your help. The last thing that you need to become an effective parent is to be a distant parent.

200 Children Sent Home From School In Uniform Crackdown

Walkden High School in Manchester, rated as “Good” by Ofsted, recently sent home approximately 200 children on the first day back to school following the summer holidays. Citing guideline breaches such as the wrong type of shoes, the school authorities were keen to enforce their strict uniform policy right from the off.

Walkden High headteacher, Elaine Hilton, explained that a letter was sent out to parents outlining the uniform guidelines and non-compliance consequences prior to the start of the academic year. Hilton also insisted of the mainly positive response from parents, whose support has ensured the “swift resolution of most uniform concerns”.

However, in a school of 1,200 pupils, 200 represents a sizeable proportion of the overall attendance. While school uniform has always stimulated much debate amongst pupils and teachers, as well as parents and school staff, and there are indeed similarities here regarding the pro-uniform case being put forward by Walkden High. Headteacher Elaine Hilton cites the same,age-old arguments in her defence of the strict dress regime, including the economical benefits, promotion of equality and mutual respect amongst students, and the betterment of the school’s reputation.

It is inevitable that some students will fail to adhere to new and rigorous uniform requirements, but 200? The unusually high number may be explained by the unusually stern demands being placed on pupils by Walkden. From a look through the uniform policy available on the school website, one discovers the extent of the restrictions, which include; no make-up, no jewellery except a wristwatch, hair accessories must be of school colours, top shirt button must be fastened, and pupils are limited to plain white or black socks.

Not only does the school provide a digital reminder of the uniform policy should one wish to check if it is acceptable to wear stripy pants or perhaps if it is a punishable offence to roll up one’s sleeves, Walkden have also provided an overview of shoes acceptable for school, apparently at the request of pupils; I predict this was more due to a sense of confusion and a means to prevent any more dismissals rather than any show of support for the regime.

School uniform is not a bad thing, it provides a sense of community, if only through a collective feeling of repression. However, to take it to the extremes as implemented by Walkden High school not only results in more time being spent on reprimanding pupils – who perhaps have a blue ribbon in their hair rather than a red one – than is being focused on the education of the children, but also stifles the need for at least some level of self-expression at this young age.

School uniform rules do not, by themselves, eradicate personality. When implemented without the appropriate level of leniency or common sense however, can serve to alienate and embitter pupils from a young age. This is an aspect of academic life which has been and will be around for some time (in places like Edinburgh school uniform is a familiar fixture of the city streets), and so we must learn how to handle the debate surrounding this issue.
